Self-knowledge is the ability that a person has to know himself, discover his strengths, his qualities, his defects and his own characteristics.

The concepts of self-knowledge and self-esteem go hand in hand. The greater your personal self-knowledge, the better you can work on your own self-esteem, as you are aware of all the capacity you have.

Self-knowledge allows you to value yourself, have more patience with your defects and discover your abilities to be able to enhance them much better. It is important to work on self-knowledge to achieve internal balance and emotional well-being.

There are some options to improve an individual's self-knowledge and thus be able to connect with the very essence of his person.

How to improve self-knowledge

Once we have explained what self-knowledge is, we will discuss ways to improve it.These are some options to improve it:

  • Dedicate time to yourself: It is very likely that stress and the busy life that humans have, prevent us from sitting down and taking care of ourselves. But it is very important to spend some time and do our own reflection that allows us to get to know each other much better. Stop, breathe and ask ourselves about ourselves in order to contemplate what we feel and what we are. This will help us improve our personal self-knowledge.
  • Write down your strengths and weaknesses: It is very interesting to delve into yourself and be aware of everything in which you stand out and where you can improve. It is not about being critical constantly, but about knowing our characteristics. And, from there, further enhance the strengths if possible, as well as work to improve the weaknesses.
  • External vision: This exercise can be very interesting, as long as we ask someone who is coherent and trustworthy for the description. Many times our own abilities go unnoticed and having someone's opinion can help us to realize very important aspects of our own that we can explore to get more out of them.
  • Emotional intelligence: Emotional intelligence helps us regulate our emotions and live in a more balanced way. A person who takes care of developing this aspect will achieve a greater general well-being and a better self-knowledge.
  • Write down everything that makes you happy: Writing what you are passionate about and being able to keep it in mind will be easier to achieve simply by having clarity of ideas. If you analyze everything that makes you happy, write it down and set goals, you are promoting your own self-knowledge.
  • Do not let anyone guide your purposes: You must start to trust yourself and forget the labels that others can coin you. Only you decide your purpose in life and your goals. Working on this and enhancing our own knowledge will help us get away from what others say about us and focus on our own person.

Difference between self-knowledge and self-esteem

As we said at the beginning, self-knowledge and self-esteem are two closely related concepts. However, they are not the same.

  • Self-esteem is the value we have about ourselves.
  • Self-knowledge is the information that we are able to obtain about ourselves.

Therefore, we could say that self-knowledge ends up leading to high self-esteem. That is, once we know our strengths and weaknesses objectively, our self-esteem improves.
