Work stress


Work stress is a situation that occurs when the demands of the work environment exceed the capabilities of workers to respond and comply efficiently.

Work-related stress can cause physical or psychological disorders in workers that affect their health and deteriorate it to the extent of damaging the development and performance of the person. An example of this is the burnout syndrome.

In this sense, work stress manifests itself more in industrialized cities, where work pressures tend to intensify due to the production demands presented by these societies.

These demands can seriously affect the health of workers due to the physical and mental saturation that the work environment generates.

Types of stress by duration

Depending on the duration of time, work stress can be of two types:

1. Temporary

Of course, stress can occur temporarily in a very demanding job situation or in any altercation with coworkers or superiors. This generates short and occasional periods of stress.

2. Permanent

On the contrary, prolonged stress becomes more harmful, because it becomes permanent in the face of continuous demands and problems that arise at work. The situations that cause this type of stress become repetitive. They can be situations such as the continuous discussions with bosses or coworkers, the fear of losing the job, the continuous transfers within the company and the pressures in the specific job position.

According to the impact it can have on the worker, stress can be positive or negative:

1. Positive

Job stress is positive when the pressures of work act as a motor that propels workers to perform their work with a higher level of efficiency. In this case, the human body is capable of giving a positive physical and mental response to these situations.

Since, it results as a motivation that favors productivity, so it works positively on the performance and capabilities of the worker.

2. Negative

On the other hand, negative stress is harmful to workers because it affects the worker's physical and mental health. This ultimately decreases your productive capacity and the general performance of your job duties.

Undoubtedly, among the manifestations that a person with negative stress can present are anxiety, tachycardia, insomnia and, in the worst case, depression. This type of stress deteriorates the health of individuals, so it would be advisable for people to take measures that help them control and handle it correctly.

Symptoms of work stress

Among some of the symptoms that can manifest when suffering from work stress we find the following:

1. Psychological symptoms

  • Job dissatisfaction.
  • Irritability.
  • Tension.
  • Anxiety.
  • Boredom.

2. Physiological symptoms

  • Changes in metabolism.
  • Increased blood, heart and respiratory pressure.
  • Headache.
  • Heart attacks.
  • Immune system involvement.

Finally, job stress is a problem that affects more people who work in industrialized societies. When it occurs permanently, it has a negative effect, especially affecting people's physical and mental health. These alterations in the health of the worker produce loss of productivity and efficiency at work.
