Evolutionary game theory is an application of game theory to the field of biology. It focuses on the dynamics of the strategy rather than the balances of the game.

Evolutionary game theory poses problem solving in a similar way as game theory does, in keeping with the characteristics of biology.

In this sense, in nature certain social conflicts occur, such as obtaining food, in which the participants are not rational and do not seek to reach the optimal solution. The theory of evolution is, in part, the way to optimize the functioning of a population.

On the other hand, evolutionary game theory is related to Darwinian evolution, including competition, natural selection, and heredity. In this way, it contributes to the understanding of group, sexual or altruism selection, among many others. Evolutionary dynamics is commonly studied through replicating equations.

Structure of evolutionary games

Evolutionary game theory studies the different Darwinian mechanisms with a system made up of population, game, and replicator dynamics. The process is the following:

  • The model has a population that shows the variation between the different competitors in the game.
  • The participants intervene based on the rules of the game. These rules are the payments that each player makes in aptitude units, which translates into the production rate of the offspring. When the strategies are combined among the members of the population, there is an alteration in the payment results. In this case, the individuals leave the game when they achieve a match. The characteristics of said pairing are different depending on the result of the contest that is represented in a Payment Matrix.
  • After solving the problem, the resulting fitness will affect each member of the population, modifying the level of physical condition that each individual has.
  • Finally, the new generation of the population is positioned in the same place as the previous one and the cycle repeats itself.

Examples of application of evolutionary games.

This theory has been used to explain certain characteristics of human behavior. For instance:

  • Moral behavior.
  • Private property.
  • Social learning.
  • Social norms.
  • Altruism.

In conclusion, evolutionary games are an adaptation of game theory to natural selection proposed by Darwin. They are intended to solve certain unknowns resulting from human evolution.
