Hardware parts

Being the hardware the physical or tangible set of a computing device, the parts of the hardware consist of each of the elements that make it up.

In other words, any computing device is made up of hardware and software, so in this case the different elements of the hardware will be exposed.

What are the hardware parts?

Although all parts of the hardware are essential for the proper functioning of the PC, console or smartphone, the main ones will be shown in an order from highest to lowest importance:

  • Motherboard or motherboard: This board has the job of executing and linking each and every part of the hardware. In addition, it can have the function of performing certain basic activities of other elements, such as basic graphical functions. If we had to compare it to a part of the human body, it would be the brain.
  • ROM memory: ROM memory is responsible for the basic reading of programs and operating system. In most cases it is integrated into the motherboard. Its mission is to execute the reading of the operating system, computer programs or files that we have decided to save on the device. It would be the hardware eyes.
  • RAM memory: This memory temporarily stores the task on which we are immersed. It works as an ‘executing arm’ of the device. The more RAM, the more ‘arms’ and therefore, more simultaneous tasks can be performed.
  • Mass storage units: Commonly called ‘hard disk’, it is the unit that stores all the information on the device. In this case we could say that it would be a kind of backpack.
  • Graphics cards: In recent years, their use has spread to all devices aimed at use in video games or audiovisual works. It could be said that they are ‘executing arms’ like those of RAM, only specialized only in certain tasks.
  • External device inputs: These are physical inputs of the device that allow direct interaction with USB devices, printers, mobile phones, MP3, internet cable, RGB, VGA, etc. In this case, it would be a kind of mouth, ears and nose of the device.

Hardware parts example

As an example, the elements that a laptop of the Lenovo brand model T420 has as a whole will be detailed below:

  • Screen size (inches): 14. It is the screen built into the device that allows us to see the work we are doing. It is essential but does not necessarily have to be integrated into the main device, there are also independent screens for computer towers.
  • Storage: 512GB. This is the size of the mass storage unit of the device.
  • RAM memory: 8GB. In this case, it is the number of ‘arms’ the device has. The more arms it will cost you less to do more than one task at a time.
  • Processor brand: Intel. This is the processor brand, which integrates the motherboard and this in turn the ROM.
  • Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 3000. This graphics card is not specialized per se, but is the basic one that is integrated into the motherboard.
  • Keyboard type and language: QWERTY. The keyboard in a computer has the same status as a screen, it can be integrated into the device or not.
  • Storage type: SSD. There are two types of mass storage, dynamic (SSD) or static (HDD). The difference between the two for the user is the reading speed, which is higher in SSD units than in HDD.
  • Webcam: Yes. It is a camera that receives an image in order to project it to another user. It is similar in use to the front cameras of smartphones. Again it is an element that may or may not be integrated.
  • Microphone: Yes. In this case the microphone fulfills the function of receiving audio and sending it to a receiver. It is a case very similar to that of the webcam and again, it can be integrated or not.
  • Card reader: Yes. Finally we have the card reader. It is responsible for reading external memories, such as SD or micro SD cards.

As we can see, in the set of elements that make up a computer there are parts that are essential and must be integrated, and others have the option of integrating it or not in the device.
