Cultural poverty is a type of poverty that refers to the inability of an individual to access the consumption of services and activities of a cultural nature.

Cultural poverty, therefore, is the inability shown by individuals who, in society, are unable to access the consumption of activities and services of a cultural nature.

Always, taking as reference a population in which these individuals are shown as demographically and socially similar individuals. Cultural poverty is a type of poverty that shows less development in those countries that present it. Well, the promotion of culture and education also brings with it a greater intellectual development.

This type of poverty is usually related to those territories that present other types of poverty, preventing access to education, for example.

Cultural poverty has gained great relevance in recent years, where initiatives such as the “orange economy” have emerged to counteract this situation in certain emerging economies.

Causes of cultural poverty

Among the causes that end up giving rise to situations of cultural poverty, the following should be highlighted:

  • Lack of access to education.
  • Little promotion of culture.
  • Government disinterest.
  • Low income levels.
  • Presence of another type of poverty.
  • Disinterest in the population.

These, among others, are some of the causes that can cause a certain place to present this type of poverty.

Consequences of cultural poverty

Among the consequences derived from cultural poverty, the following relationship should be highlighted:

  • Little social development.
  • Lack of critical spirit.
  • Little innovation and creativity.
  • Lack of motivation and encouragement.
  • Poor development of skills and abilities.
  • Inability to develop qualified jobs.
  • Precariousness of the labor market.
  • Low value added economy.

Thus, these, among others, are some of the consequences that such a lack of culture could lead to.

How do you combat cultural poverty?

In recent years, economists from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have developed new theories that try to foster new currents of thought that advocate the promotion and diffusion of culture in developing countries. In this sense, coining concepts such as "orange economy", which seek the dissemination of culture, as well as the benefits associated with such promotion. Through these concepts, the development of policies that seek to enhance the economy of culture is sought.

In addition, among the economic benefits highlighted by its authors, culture is a great engine of growth. According to the authors, the promotion of culture gives rise to a creative industry that ends up leading to the improvement of other sectors that are influenced by this creativity and innovation.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the low promotion of culture in certain developing economies makes the application of policies that try to stimulate this situation have become a necessity.
