Hard disk types

comparisons

The types of hard drives are the different storage units that are related around computing devices.

These drives are essential, since without them data hosting would not be possible. And consequently, the use of most devices could not be carried out.

As an example, we can say that one of the functions of our brain is to store memories, which allows us to learn or memorize. A storage unit works in a similar way. which is responsible for sending, receiving and storing data.

Hard disk types

Hard disk types can be classified in a multitude of ways and by infinite parameters. But if we generalize in the most important factors, we will take into account mainly if they are:

  • Internal or external: Although most devices have internal memory that houses the operating system, leaving some space for other files and programs. This does not preclude the possibility that the device can interact with peripherals that can expand its default storage.
  • Physical or virtual: If we have a storage unit connected directly to our device at our workplace or at home, it will be considered physical and its use will be local. On the other hand, if we use a storage that needs an internet connection and in which we can connect from anywhere with network access, this time it will be considered storage in the 'cloud'. That is, remotely to our location.
  • Mechanical or solid state: On the other hand, as regards technology in this type of computer peripherals, they can be divided mainly into mechanical state and solid state hard drives (HDD and SSD respectively for its acronym in English).

Solid state drives are the natural evolution of mechanical state drives, as they are more efficient and faster, but also somewhat more expensive.

Another type of hard drives that we can find based on their technology, are the PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) and the SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), which are respectively first of all the forerunner of modern hard drives, and secondly, the evolution that made the PATA more reliable and faster.

In another order we find multiple hard drives, which function as a kind of tower where several hard drives can be stacked. In addition, there would also be mobile storage units, such as CDs. DVD's, SD cards or portable USB memories.

Examples of hard drives

Taking into account the factors already mentioned, the following hard drives can be classified as follows:

As can be seen, physical disks can be internal or external, while virtual disks can only be external. In addition, the disks, regardless of the type, may be HDD, SSD, PATA, SCSI, etc., as appropriate to the objective of the task and the budget.
